The town's daily food market, busy from sunrise. The cool climate of the surrounding plateau supports crops that you cannot find further north in Tanzania — Irish potatoes, peas, carrots, plums, and Cape gooseberries — and the market is the place to see them. The Saturday market is the largest, drawing villagers from the surrounding hills.
Honey from the wild forests south of town and Njombe avocados — large, smooth-skinned, ripe almost year-round — are local specialties worth seeking out. A few simple food stalls inside the market serve cheap ugali na nyama and tea.
