Over 200 bird species have been recorded in Fazao-Malfakassa, and birding is probably the single most rewarding activity in the park. The mix of habitats — gallery forest, miombo woodland, savanna grassland, riverine swamp and the higher-altitude vegetation in the Malfakassa hills — packs an unusual variety into a small area. Hornbills, turacos, rollers, bee-eaters, sunbirds and a long list of raptors are easy to see in a day's walking.
The classic dawn walk from camp out into the savanna picks up most of the open-country birds. Afternoon walks into the gallery forest are quieter but produce the more elusive forest species. Bring binoculars and a regional field guide — the park has none for loan — and consider going in the cool, dry months between December and March, when the resident species are joined by migrants from Europe and northern Africa.
