Kéran is one of the best birding sites in Togo. The mix of savanna, gallery forest along the river, and seasonal wetlands packs together a wide range of species — ground hornbills, several rollers and bee-eaters, brilliant parrots and turacos, and a rich variety of raptors. The dry season from December to April is the prime period: migrants from the Palearctic add a layer of European and North African species to the rich resident community.
Walks along the river system, particularly very early in the morning, are the most productive — large flocks gather around the permanent pools and at the drying margins of seasonal wetlands. Bring a regional field guide and binoculars; the park has no equipment to lend.
