A small, semi-permanent elephant presence persists in Kéran — a handful of individuals that move seasonally through the park and across the border into Benin. They are seen rarely, almost always around the river pools in the late dry season, and almost never twice in the same place. Park rangers track movements through ranger patrols and intermittent camera trap data and can give you the most current sense of where to look.
For travellers, the realistic ambition is not so much to see an elephant as to walk in a landscape where they still exist — and to support the underfunded protection effort by paying entrance fees and hiring local guides. Anyone lucky enough to encounter the herd should keep a long distance, allow the animals to move freely, and follow ranger instructions without question.
