Bizerte is a fishing port, and the food reflects it: grilled fish, seafood couscous, octopus salads, calamari, and the local speciality poissonade (a tuna-and-onion sandwich on a hollowed-out baguette). The best eating is along the old port quay and on the corniche; the cheap eating is in the medina near Place Bouchoucha.
Le Petit Mousse on the corniche has been Bizerte's reliable seafood restaurant for decades — bouillabaisse, grilled sea bream, full menus for around 40–60 dinars. Restaurant Sport Nautique on the old port has tables right on the quay and serves a good salade méchouia (grilled vegetable salad) and fresh fish; a dinner with wine runs 50–80 dinars. Eden on the harbour does grilled fish and chips for less.
In the medina, the small canteens around the Great Mosque do lablabi (chickpea breakfast soup), koucha (oven-baked mutton with potatoes), and brik à l'oeuf (fried egg-and-tuna pastry) for under 10 dinars. The fish-grill stands on the corniche in summer fry sardines and red mullet to order with chips and harissa.
Most places are open through the day; almost nowhere serves alcohol except the older restaurants on the corniche, where it is added discreetly to the bill.
