Things to Do

Carthage's archaeological sites are spread out — the whole UNESCO-listed area covers several square kilometres of suburban Tunis. The standard approach is to buy the multi-site ticket at any of the main entrances (Byrsa, the Antonine Baths, the Tophet, the Punic Ports) and tackle them as a half-day or full-day circuit.

For a focused half-day: start at the Byrsa Hill and Carthage National Museum for context, walk down to the Antonine Baths for the most photogenic ruins, then drop south to the Punic Ports and Tophet for the city's most unsettling history. A full day adds the Amphitheatre, Circus, Cisterns of La Malga, and the Damous El Karita and Saint-Cyprien basilicas.

Finish with Sidi Bou Said on the cliff just to the north — the blue-and-white village is touristy but genuinely beautiful, and a cold drink at one of the cliff-top cafés is the ideal way to end a hot day among the ruins.
