Chenini makes more sense as part of a circuit of the Dahar highlands and the Tataouine region than as a standalone destination.
Douiret, about 22 kilometres southwest of Tataouine, is the closest comparable village and the natural companion to Chenini. Like Chenini it is an abandoned hilltop Berber settlement with a whitewashed mosque and cave dwellings, but Douiret is quieter and less visited — you may have it entirely to yourself. The two villages together make a full day, especially if you linger at each.
Ksar Ouled Soltane, about 20 kilometres south of Tataouine, is the best-preserved ksar in the region and a short drive from both Chenini and Douiret. Its four-storey ghorfas around two courtyards are the most photogenic of all the ksour, and it appeared in Star Wars: The Phantom Menace as the slave quarters of Mos Espa.
From Tataouine you can also reach Matmata to the north, the village of underground pit-houses that also appeared in Star Wars, and Douz, the main gateway to the Sahara dunes.
