The hills directly behind Tabarka are covered with one of the most intact forests in North Africa — a mixture of cork oak, Aleppo pine and eucalyptus that feels genuinely wild. The Kroumirie range is wetter than most of Tunisia, which is why the forest thrives here when the rest of the country becomes scrub.
Several walking trails lead up from the town into the forest. The easiest follows the road south before branching onto paths through the trees. Wild boar, red deer and Barbary deer inhabit the area, though they are rarely seen during the day. Birdwatching is excellent in spring. A four-wheel-drive vehicle opens up routes deeper into the hills.
