Tabarka Rocks

Dramatic coastal rock formations west of town

A striking group of weathered limestone formations that jut out of the sea just west of the town centre. The Needles, as the tallest columns are known, are visible from the beach and make for a fine walk along the coastal path.

The rocks also form an underwater reef that attracts divers and snorkellers. The base of the largest formation drops steeply into clear water, with sea fans and grouper common sightings. Even from the shore the colour of the water around the rocks is unusually vivid.

A story
The Needles — a cluster of tall rock stacks rising from the sea just west of Tabarka — were used as a natural landmark by Genoese coral merchants from the 16th century onwards. Local fishermen still navigate by them on foggy mornings.
