Dar Chariet Museum

The Dar Chariet is the best museum in Tozeur — housed in a reconstructed traditional palace at the edge of the old quarter, it displays the material culture of the Tunisian south across several galleries and courtyards. The collection runs from ancient manuscripts and illuminated Qurans to Berber jewellery, embroidered textiles, pottery, and antique weapons. Wax figures in period dress illustrate traditional crafts and ceremonies, which sounds kitsch but works well in the right light.

The building itself is a reconstruction of a 14th-century palace style, built using traditional materials and techniques. The internal courtyard with its carved stucco and horseshoe arches gives a sense of how the wealthy merchants of the Saharan trade route lived. Hire the audio guide or ask at the entrance for an English-speaking guide — the context makes the objects much more interesting.
