Palm Grove and Belvedere

Tozeur's palm grove is extraordinary — more than 200,000 date palms drawing on hundreds of ancient springs in a system of irrigation channels that has functioned continuously since Roman times. The grove covers some 1,000 hectares and is divided into plots, each with its own allocation from the spring system. The palms are packed tight enough that the interior of the grove is green and shaded even in midsummer.

You can enter the grove on foot from the northern edge of the town and walk paths between the irrigation channels. In harvest season (October–November), the dates hang in heavy clusters beneath the fronds — the Deglet Nour variety grown here is considered the finest in Tunisia and commands premium prices in European markets. The Belvedere viewpoint on the edge of the grove gives the best overview of the palm canopy and, beyond it, the edge of the Chott el-Jerid disappearing into the desert.
