Zarzis Synagogue

The Mishkan Ya'akov Synagogue is located in the town centre and is one of a small number of functioning Jewish places of worship still open in Tunisia outside Jerba. It is not a tourist site in the usual sense — visits should be respectful and, where possible, arranged through the small local Jewish community or the caretaker. The building itself is modest but the history of the community that built and used it deserves attention.

A story
The Mishkan Ya'akov Synagogue is one of the few remaining traces of the Jewish community that lived in Zarzis for generations before most emigrated to Israel and France in the mid-20th century. The building is still maintained and services are still occasionally held, though the community is tiny. It is a plain whitewashed building typical of Tunisian Jewish architecture, without the ornate decoration of the more famous El Ghriba synagogue on Jerba, but it carries genuine historical weight as one of the last active synagogues in southern Tunisia.
