Gorilla Habituation Experience

The Gorilla Habituation Experience is a more immersive alternative to standard gorilla tracking, available only in the Rushaga sector. While standard tracking gives you one hour with a fully habituated family, the habituation experience allows up to four hours with a semi-wild family that is still being introduced to human contact.

The experience is more physically demanding and less predictable than standard tracking. You may spend part of the time crawling through dense undergrowth following researchers. You might see behaviour — young males testing boundaries, animals responding to unexpected stress — that you would never witness with a calm, habituated group. Permits are fewer and cost more than standard tracking, and must be booked directly with the Uganda Wildlife Authority.

A story
The Gorilla Habituation Experience works with families that are still being acclimatised to human presence — families that have not yet reached the point where they will accept strangers calmly. The process takes two to three years. Visitors join the researchers' daily visits, experiencing the rawer, less predictable side of gorilla contact: animals that may run, may display aggressively, or may simply vanish into the undergrowth. It is less refined than standard tracking, and considerably more intense.
