The point where the Nile leaves Lake Victoria is marked by a small memorial garden on the western bank, a short boda-boda ride from town. The view over the water is genuinely striking — you can watch the lake narrow and gather speed as it commits to its 6,700-kilometre journey north. Boat trips from here take you out to the exact source point on the water. The entrance fee is around USD 10 for international visitors.
Source of the Nile
Where Lake Victoria narrows to begin the Nile's journey
A story
In 1862, John Hanning Speke stood near this spot and declared he had found the source of the Nile — a claim that sparked years of bitter geographical controversy back in England. His rival Richard Burton refused to believe Lake Victoria was the source at all. Speke died in a shooting accident the day before the two were due to publicly debate the question, and whether it was suicide or misadventure has never been settled.
