Murchison Falls National Park

Ugandan national park where the Nile squeezes through Murchison Falls before widening toward Lake Albert

Murchison Falls is Uganda's largest national park and one of the finest wildlife destinations in East Africa. The Nile flows through the centre of the park, and the stretch between the falls and the delta where the river enters Lake Albert is rich with hippos, crocodiles, elephants, giraffes, buffalo and a long list of bird species. A boat trip upstream toward the falls is the best way to see it all.

The falls themselves are extraordinary: the entire Nile forces through a gap barely six metres wide before plunging 43 metres into the gorge below. You can hike to the top and stand right at the edge, watching the spray and feeling the ground vibrate. The road in is long and rough, but the park more than justifies the effort.
