Entebbe is a quiet lakeside town on the northern shore of Lake Victoria, 37 kilometres southwest of Kampala. It serves as Uganda's main international gateway — Entebbe International Airport handles virtually all international flights — and many travellers pass through on their way to Kampala and the national parks. Those who stay longer find a genuinely pleasant town: cooler than Kampala, green, unhurried, and set amid tropical gardens and lake beaches.
The Entebbe Botanical Gardens, 100 acres of landscaped grounds bordering a kilometre of Lake Victoria shoreline, are one of the most beautiful green spaces in East Africa. They contain over 300 plant species and were used as a filming location for the original Tarzan films. The Uganda Wildlife Education Centre nearby is a rehabilitation zoo with over 200 animals — shoebill storks, chimpanzees, lions, and more — in spacious enclosures, accessible for a few dollars.
Lido Beach is the most popular of Entebbe's lake beaches; Aero Beach is scattered with retired aircraft, making it an unusual spot. Several resort hotels allow non-guests to use their pools and beach facilities for a small fee. Boats make day and overnight trips to the Ssese Islands archipelago and to Ngamba Island, a chimpanzee sanctuary run by the Uganda Wildlife Conservation Trust. The quiet Kigungu landing site on the western shore of the peninsula marks where the first Catholic missionaries arrived in Uganda in 1879.
