The falls are 40 km northeast of Mbala, a small town on the Tanzanian border in Zambia's far north. From Mbala the road runs out of tar after a few kilometres and becomes a graded earth track; in the wet season (December to April) sections become impassable and a 4WD with good clearance is required. Allow 90 minutes to two hours each way.
Mbala itself is reached by bus from Lusaka (a two-day journey of around 1,200 km) or — more practically — by daily flight from Lusaka to Mbeya in Tanzania, or to Kasama in Zambia, followed by a road transfer. Tour operators in Lusaka and Mpulungu (the Zambian port on Lake Tanganyika) can arrange the falls as a day trip with vehicle, driver, and local guide. There are no facilities at the falls themselves — bring food, plenty of water, and small kwacha for the entry fee and the optional local guide.
