Livingstone Museum

The Livingstone Museum is the largest and most important museum in Zambia, and it is significantly better than its modest exterior suggests. The collection covers the full sweep of the region's history: prehistoric artefacts from the Zambezi valley, ethnographic collections representing the main ethnic groups of Zambia, the natural history of the falls and the river, and an extensive David Livingstone collection.

The Livingstone galleries are the centrepiece. His personal effects — journals, navigational instruments, medical equipment — are displayed alongside explanatory material that puts his journeys in the context of both the Victorian missionary project and the existing African societies he moved through. The treatment of slavery, the Arab and Portuguese slave trade, and Livingstone's role in building the abolitionist case in Britain is well handled. Allow two hours.

A story
The museum holds one of the most important collections of David Livingstone's personal effects in existence — his maps, journals, instruments, and personal correspondence. Among the most remarkable items are the diaries from his final journeys, during which he was searching for the source of the Nile and slowly dying of disease, cared for by his African companions who eventually carried his body nearly 1,000 miles to the coast so it could be returned to England.
