Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park

Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park is a small but rewarding game reserve that begins just outside Livingstone and extends south to the falls. Despite its modest size, it has a good selection of wildlife: elephant, buffalo, giraffe, zebra, various antelope, and the famous white rhinos. Game drives are conducted in open vehicles, and the rhinos are usually traceable with the park's guides.

The park also contains the old Drift Cemetery, where some of the earliest European settlers in the region are buried — mortality was high in those early years, and the graves include children and young adults who did not survive the local diseases. A visit to this quiet corner of the park gives the colonial history a human face that the standard narrative often misses. The riverfront section of the park, where the Zambezi broadens before the falls, offers good birdwatching and elephant sightings in the dry season.

A story
The park is the only place in Zambia where white rhinoceros live. The current population of southern white rhinos was reintroduced in the early 1990s after the species had been poached to local extinction in the preceding decades. They are now regularly seen on game drives, usually in the riverside area where they graze in the late afternoon.
