The Vumba Mountains rise about 25km south of Mutare through a winding road that climbs from warm lowlands into cool, forested highlands. The Bvumba Botanical Gardens at the top are the main destination: a 200-acre garden established in 1950 with indigenous trees, flowering shrubs, and a national rose garden overlooking the Mozambique border. The mist that gives the mountains their name drifts through the garden on most mornings, creating an otherworldly atmosphere.
Beyond the gardens, the Vumba area has several small lodges and hiking trails through montane forest. Birdwatching is the main activity for serious visitors: the forest holds species including Chirinda apalis, Robert's warbler, and the beautiful Orange Ground Thrush. The Bunga Forest Reserve adjoins the area and protects some of the best intact montane forest in Zimbabwe.
