Mandavu Dam

Large northern Hwange water body attracting elephants, waterbirds, and quiet sunset game viewing.

Mandavu Dam is one of the most rewarding stops in northern Hwange, especially for travellers based at Sinamatella. The open water draws elephants, impala, kudu, and giraffe in the dry months, while the broader shoreline is good for waterbirds that are scarce in the drier pans.

The appeal here is space. Compared with the Main Camp circuit, Mandavu can feel quiet, with long views across the water and fewer vehicles. Late afternoon is best, when animals drift down to drink and the light softens across the mopane and teak woodland. The tracks around the dam can be rough, so do not leave the main routes after rain.
