Masuma Dam

Remote Hwange waterhole and picnic area known for elephants, hippos, and patient game viewing.

Masuma Dam is a favourite with Hwange regulars because it rewards patience. The waterhole sits in a quieter part of the park, far enough from Main Camp to lose the casual day traffic but accessible on a full-day drive or from the northern sectors. Elephants are the main draw, but hippos, crocodiles, waterbuck, and rich birdlife add variety.

The viewing area lets you settle in rather than constantly move. That matters in Hwange, where the best sightings often build slowly: one elephant herd becomes three, antelope start staring into the bush, or vultures reveal where a predator has been feeding. Carry lunch, water, and a proper map; this is not a quick loop.
