Ngweshla Pan

Productive southern Hwange pan where open grassland concentrates plains game and predators.

Ngweshla Pan is one of the strongest game-viewing areas in southern Hwange. The open grassland around the pan gives better visibility than dense woodland, and the mix of water, grazing, and cover pulls in zebra, wildebeest, impala, giraffe, and large elephant herds in the dry season.

Predators follow. Lion are regularly seen around Ngweshla, and wild dog sometimes hunt the wider vlei system. The pan is far enough from Main Camp that it works best as a planned drive with an early start, not an afterthought. In the late dry season, the dust, light, and concentration of animals can be spectacular.

A story
Ngweshla lies along one of Hwange's old fossil drainage lines, the dry remnants of rivers that once crossed this sandy country. These vleis and pans explain much of the park's wildlife pattern: even when surface water is pumped, animals still follow ancient low ground where grasses and minerals are better.
