Long Pool

One of Mana's permanent oxbow pools, a dry-season magnet for hippos, elephants, and birds.

Long Pool is one of the permanent oxbow pools that give Mana Pools its name. In the dry season, when smaller pans shrink or disappear, these remaining waters become magnets for wildlife. Hippos crowd the deeper sections, crocodiles patrol the edges, and elephants come down through the trees to drink.

The pool is also good for birds. Fish eagles, herons, egrets, kingfishers, storks, and bee-eaters work the water and margins, while raptors use the open floodplain nearby. As with much of Mana, the best approach is to stop and wait. The longer you sit, the more the pool reveals.
