Mana Pools Floodplain

Open Zambezi floodplain where elephants, buffalo, wild dog, and antelope gather below winterthorn trees.

The floodplain is the heart of Mana Pools: open grass, old Zambezi channels, winterthorn groves, and wide views across the river to Zambia's escarpment. The landscape is unusually readable for a Zambezi park. You can see elephant and buffalo moving between shade and water, antelope grazing in the open, and predators using the tree line as cover.

This is also where Mana's walking reputation makes sense. On foot, the scale changes completely: elephant tracks become bowls in the dust, alarm calls carry across the plain, and the distance between you and a buffalo herd matters in a way no vehicle can teach. Go with a professional guide unless you are genuinely experienced and current rules allow otherwise.

A story
Mana's famous winterthorn trees drop protein-rich pods late in the dry season, and elephants have learned to stand on their hind legs or stretch upright to reach them. The behaviour looks almost staged, but it is practical feeding in a lean season. A patient morning under these trees can be as memorable as any predator sighting.
