Zambezi Riverfront

Mana Pools' river edge, with hippos, crocodiles, elephants, and views across to Zambia.

The Zambezi riverfront gives Mana Pools its atmosphere. The river here is broad and slow, broken by sandbanks and islands, with Zambia's Lower Zambezi country rising beyond the north bank. Hippos grunt through the day, crocodiles line the warmer sand, and elephants come down to drink and cross between islands when water levels allow.

Late afternoon is the best time to be along the river. The light turns soft, bee-eaters and fish eagles become active, and the heat finally loosens its grip. Canoe safaris operate in the wider lower-Zambezi system through licensed operators, but even from the bank the river is compelling. Do not approach the water casually; crocodiles here are large and invisible until they are not.
