Buddha Dhatu Jadi (Golden Temple)

The Buddha Dhatu Jadi, universally known as the Golden Temple, stands on a hillside above Balaghata, about 4km from Bandarban town. The complex is a major Theravada Buddhist site and one of the most visually striking religious buildings in Bangladesh. The main temple is clad in golden paint and brass, visible from miles around, with tiered roofs in a style clearly drawn from Burmese architecture.

Inside the main prayer hall is a large reclining Buddha statue; the complex also includes a museum with religious artifacts and images of the Buddhist communities of the hill tracts. The site is active — monks live here and prayers are conducted daily — so visitors should dress modestly and behave respectfully. The grounds are extensive and well maintained, with views out over the surrounding forested hills. Rickshaws and CNG auto-rickshaws run from Bandarban town.

A story
The Golden Temple was built by a local Buddhist community and reflects the strong Burmese cultural influence in the Chittagong Hill Tracts. The bronze reclining Buddha inside — one of the largest in Bangladesh — took years to complete and was brought in pieces from Myanmar. The complex has become the most-visited religious site in the Bandarban district, drawing pilgrims and tourists alike.
