Nilgiri is a hilltop at around 3500 feet, one of the higher viewpoints accessible from Bandarban and the most dramatic. On clear mornings the view stretches across a sea of forested ridges to the Myanmar border, and in the early hours cloud often fills the valleys below, leaving the hilltops like islands in a white ocean. The name means "blue mountain" in Hindi and the effect on a clear day justifies it.
The journey from Bandarban takes 2-3 hours by jeep along a rough road. A military cantonment occupies the summit, and access requires coordination — the area is sensitive and permits are often needed. The Bangladesh Army also runs a tourist resort at Nilgiri, which is one way to guarantee access; advance booking through the army's tourism wing is advisable. The road passes through Chimbuk Hill and through several Mro villages, making the drive worthwhile in itself.
