Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport is the main entry point for Dhaka and Bangladesh, about 20 kilometres north of the city centre. Direct flights connect from London, Dubai, Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, Kolkata, and other regional hubs. Biman Bangladesh Airlines, the national carrier, flies to various international destinations, as does US-Bangla Airlines and several Gulf carriers.
The airport to city journey by road is straightforward but traffic can add significant time — allow ninety minutes to two hours during peak hours. App-based ride services (Pathao, Shohoz) are reliable from the airport. The new Dhaka Metro Rail connects the airport area (Diabari station) to Agargaon and Motijheel in the city, making it much faster than the road during rush hours.
Overland connections from India (Benapole crossing near Kolkata, Agartala crossing in the northeast) are used by some travellers. The Maitree Express train runs between Dhaka and Kolkata three times a week — a pleasant if slow way to arrive from West Bengal.
