Bumthang is about 250 km from Thimphu by road, a journey of 9–10 hours over the Pele La and Yotong La mountain passes. The road is paved throughout but steep and winding. Most visitors come as part of a guided tour package — independent travel to Bhutan requires a licensed guide and a daily fee, which covers transport, accommodation, and food.
Bathpalathang Airport (PBH) near Jakar receives domestic flights from Paro. Druk Air operates scheduled services, subject to weather conditions: the approach to the short mountain airstrip requires clear visibility. If flying is an option, it saves a long road journey and offers spectacular mountain views. Book well in advance.
