Jakar Dzong is the administrative and religious fortress of Bumthang District, perched on a ridge above the Chokhor Valley with sweeping views in every direction. The dzong was originally built in the 17th century on the site of a smaller earlier structure, and expanded significantly in the 19th century. Like all Bhutanese dzongs it functions as both a monastery and an administrative centre — the government offices of Bumthang District still operate here alongside a monk body.
The dzong is impressive from a distance and worth visiting for the architecture and the views from the approach path. Visitors can enter the courtyard. Dress modestly; shoes must be removed when entering the temple sections.
