Kurjey Lhakhang

Kurjey Lhakhang is the most sacred temple complex in Bumthang and one of the holiest sites in Bhutan. The complex consists of three temples built against a sheer cliff face in the Chokhor Valley. The oldest and most sacred, built on the spot where Guru Rinpoche is said to have meditated and left an impression of his body in the rock, dates from the 17th century. A massive juniper tree behind the complex is said to have grown from Guru Rinpoche's walking staff.

The walk from the complex along the river to Tamshing Monastery takes about 20 minutes and passes through beautiful farming country with views across the valley. The Kurjey Tshechu, held in the fifth month of the Bhutanese calendar, draws pilgrims from across the region and is one of Bhutan's most important festivals.

A story
The name means "body print" in Dzongkha — a reference to the impression that Guru Rinpoche left in the rock of the cliff face when he meditated here in the 8th century. The rock face with the imprint is visible inside the oldest temple. Terton Pema Lingpa, the 15th-century treasure discoverer, is also associated with this site.
