Jampey Lhakhang is one of the oldest temples in Bhutan, traditionally dated to the 7th century CE. Dedicated to Maitreya — the future Buddha — the temple houses a large and much-venerated Maitreya statue. The building itself has been reconstructed multiple times over the centuries, but the site retains an atmosphere of great antiquity.
The temple is active: monks and local worshippers use it daily, and pilgrims from across Bhutan and Tibetan communities abroad visit regularly. The annual Jampey Lhakhang Drup festival in October includes the famous naked fire dance (Mewang), performed at midnight and believed to cleanse participants of sins. Non-Buddhist visitors are welcome to watch. The temple is a 10-minute walk from Jakar town.
