Lhuntsi is one of the harder dzongkhags to reach. The road in branches off the east–west highway at Mongar — about an hour east of Bumthang — and climbs north for around three hours along the Kuri Chhu through villages and apple orchards. From Thimphu, allow three full days of driving with overnight stops in Bumthang and Mongar; from Paro airport, four.
There is no public transport that runs the whole way; visits are organised through a Bhutanese tour operator in line with the country's daily-fee tourism policy. Roads are paved but narrow and prone to monsoon landslides between June and September.
