Khoma Weaving Village

Khoma, an hour's walk or short drive from the dzong, is the centre of kishuthara weaving. Women weave on the verandahs of every house — the click of the back-strap loom is the soundtrack of the village — and visitors are welcome to watch, learn, and (mostly) buy.

Beyond the textile interest, Khoma is a beautiful Bhutanese hill village: clustered traditional houses, terraced fields, prayer flags strung across the slopes. Combine with a longer walk up the valley to Sawang, the trailhead for treks into the high country.

A story
Almost every household in Khoma weaves kishuthara — the densely patterned silk-on-silk brocade that is among the most expensive textiles in Bhutan. A single full kira can take a year on the back-strap loom and sells for thousands of dollars; the older patterns are passed down mother-to-daughter and never written down.
