Kila Nunnery

Cliffside nunnery at 3,500m on the road to Chele La, one of Bhutan's oldest active nunneries

A small Drukpa Kagyu nunnery clinging to a steep slope below Chele La Pass, at about 3,500 metres elevation. Founded in the 9th century, it is one of the oldest continuously active nunneries in Bhutan. Around 30–70 nuns are normally in residence; they live a strict practice life with limited contact with the outside world, and visiting is appreciated to be quiet and brief.

The approach can be done two ways: by car up to a parking area below the nunnery, or — more rewarding — as a downhill three-hour walk from Chele La Pass itself, ending at the road where a driver can meet you. The buildings cling to the cliff in characteristic Himalayan fashion, with whitewashed walls and small terraces; the view down the Paro valley from the nunnery courtyard is one of the most photogenic in the country.
