Paro International Airport

Bhutan's only international airport, famous for one of the most demanding commercial landings in the world

Paro Airport sits on the floor of the valley about seven kilometres south of Paro town, hemmed in by mountains in every direction. It is one of the most dramatically positioned airports in the world and visiting it on landing day is itself a small attraction — the road from town runs along a ridge with a perfect view of the runway and the approach corridor through the mountains.

For most travellers the airport is the entry point into Bhutan rather than a destination, but if you have time between flights or a clear morning before departure, a short walk along the perimeter road gives you the same view that the photographs are taken from. The terminal building is itself worth a moment: built in traditional Bhutanese dzong style, all whitewashed walls and carved woodwork, it is one of the more architecturally distinctive small airports in Asia.

A story
Only a few dozen pilots in the world are certified to land here. The approach is by sight, not instrument — through a narrow river valley flanked by 5,000-metre peaks, with two ninety-degree banked turns in the final minute and a runway only 2,265 metres long. There is no go-around once the descent has started; the surrounding mountains make a second attempt impossible. Every pilot's first flight in is a check ride with a senior captain.
