The Amo Chhu Crocodile Breeding Centre sits on the bank of the Amo Chhu river, about a five-minute drive north of the bus terminal. It was set up to help conserve the gharial, a critically endangered crocodilian with a distinctive long, narrow snout adapted for catching fish — quite unlike the broad-jawed mugger crocodiles more commonly seen across South Asia.
The enclosures hold gharials of various sizes, from hatchlings to large adults, and the setting along the river gives the place a wilder feel than a conventional zoo. It is a small facility and a short visit, but if you have an hour to spare before the road north, it is genuinely interesting.
