Getting There

Phuntsholing is the main southern gateway to Bhutan, sitting on the border with India opposite the Indian town of Jaigaon in West Bengal. Almost all overland travellers from India enter the country here.

The border crossing

The border between Jaigaon and Phuntsholing is open to foot traffic throughout the day. Indian nationals cross freely for day visits with standard ID; citizens of other countries must hold a valid Bhutanese visa, which must be arranged in advance through a licensed Bhutanese tour operator. Independent travel to Bhutan is not permitted for most foreign nationals — the visa comes bundled with a minimum daily spend package through a registered operator.

The immigration office is a short walk from the Bhutan Gate on the Bhutanese side. Formalities are generally quick, but weekend crossings can be busier.

Getting to Jaigaon

Jaigaon, the Indian town directly across the border, is the practical staging point. The nearest major rail hub is New Jalpaiguri (NJP), served by trains from Kolkata (around eight hours), Delhi, and other Indian cities. From NJP, Jaigaon is roughly 90 kilometres by road — about two to three hours by shared jeep or taxi, or longer by bus. Bagdogra airport, near Siliguri, is the closest airport to the border and has connections to Kolkata, Delhi, and Guwahati.

The road to Thimphu

From Phuntsholing, the only road into Bhutan's interior climbs north through the Himalayan foothills to Thimphu, the capital. The distance is around 180 kilometres but the drive typically takes six to eight hours due to the mountain terrain and road conditions. The scenery along the way is spectacular — the road rises steeply out of the subtropical foothills into coniferous forest and eventually alpine landscapes.

An immigration checkpoint at Kharbandi Gompa, about three kilometres north of town, is where Indian nationals show their inner-line permits before proceeding further into Bhutan.

Buses and taxis

The Bhutan government bus service operates regular departures from Phuntsholing to Thimphu, taking the full day. Taxis are available and faster but considerably more expensive; shared taxis are a reasonable middle option if you can find other travellers going the same way. The bus terminal is centrally located in Phuntsholing town.
