Zangto Pelri Lhakhang rises three storeys above a small park near the centre of Phuntsholing, a few minutes' walk from the Bhutan Gate. The building is an architectural statement — modelled on the celestial abode of Guru Rinpoche, with richly carved wooden facades, vivid murals depicting scenes from Guru Rinpoche's life, and statues of Buddhist deities on each level.
Inside, the ground floor holds a large prayer hall, while upper floors contain shrines with increasingly ornate imagery. The building is open throughout the day and admission is free. A large prayer wheel stands in the adjoining park, and the surrounding garden is a surprisingly peaceful spot given how close it is to the busy market.
For visitors who will spend only a night in Phuntsholing before heading north, this temple offers a quieter and more contemplative introduction to Bhutanese religious art than the crowds at the border crossing.
