Punakha Domchoe Festival

The Punakha Domchoe is one of Bhutan's most spectacular religious festivals, held annually at Punakha Dzong in late February or early March (the exact date varies by the lunar calendar). The three-day event commemorates the defeat of Tibetan invaders in the 17th century by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal, re-enacted through elaborate masked dances, processions, and rituals in the dzong's courtyard.

The festival opens with a dramatic scene involving hundreds of monks and local men dressed as ancient warriors in chainmail and helmets, carrying weapons and shields. The masked dances (cham) that follow are among the most visually striking in all of Bhutan. The setting — in the main courtyard of Punakha Dzong, with the river visible beyond the walls — makes this one of the most photogenic events in the country. Accommodation in the valley books up well in advance; plan at least two months ahead.
