Punakha's lower elevation (around 1,200 metres) makes it considerably warmer than Thimphu, and it is one of the most comfortable places in Bhutan during winter. The valley is at its most lush in spring, when jacaranda trees bloom purple against the dzong's white walls — typically late March to early April. This is also rice planting season, and the terraced fields are vivid green.
The Punakha Domchoe festival (late February/early March) is the main annual event and draws visitors from across Bhutan and abroad. The monsoon (June–August) brings heavy rain, though the valley remains accessible. Autumn (October–November) is dry and clear, with excellent views of the Himalayan peaks from the Dochula Pass en route from Thimphu.
