Kratie's main draw is wildlife, but there's enough in and around town to fill a day without rushing. The Irrawaddy dolphin watching is the centrepiece, and the riverside market and temple round out a pleasant morning on foot.
Irrawaddy Dolphin Watching
Moto drivers charge around US$5 for the trip to Kampi, about 15km north of town — a 25-minute ride through authentic rural Cambodian countryside. A short boat trip is included to get close to where the dolphins surface. The rapids upstream are worth adding when the river is high. Agree on the full price before you set off, as some drivers add charges for the rapids and a temple visit that weren't mentioned at the start.
Local Market
Kratie's market is a lively, unpretentious place where rural Cambodia is on full display. Watch frogs make their escape attempts through holes in the nets, pick up steamed pork buns for a few cents, or grab freshly grilled corn cakes. Good for breakfast and a wander before the heat sets in.
