Elephant Bar

Classic bar at the Raffles Hotel Le Royal

The Elephant Bar at Raffles Hotel Le Royal opened in 1929 and has hosted, over its long life, Charlie Chaplin, Jacqueline Kennedy, André Malraux, and a long parade of foreign correspondents covering Cambodia's bad years. The dark wood interiors, deep leather chairs and uniformed staff are deliberately unchanged.

Cocktails are pricey by Phnom Penh standards (around US$10) but generously made; the signature is the Femme Fatale, mixed in honour of Jackie Kennedy's 1967 visit. Happy hour runs 16:00–20:00 with half-price drinks and complimentary canapés — the best way to enjoy the room without spending a fortune.
