Silk Market (Xiushui Street)

The five-floor indoor market on Jianguomen Dajie is the most famous shopping destination for international visitors in Beijing, and the most negotiation-intensive. Vendors sell silk fabrics, cashmere scarves, clothing, bags, shoes, jewellery, and electronics — a large proportion of it counterfeit branded goods. Bargaining is mandatory; the opening price for foreigners is typically three to five times the final price. Knowing roughly what you want to pay before you start is essential.

The genuine silk and cashmere on the upper floors is worth looking at if you have the patience to verify quality. The lower floors are more chaotic. Accessible by subway (Line 1, Yonganli station). Note that Chinese customs and your home country's import rules on counterfeit goods both apply; the legal risk of bringing home a fake Rolex is real.
