Beijing's main pedestrianised shopping street, running north from Chang'an Avenue through the Dongcheng district. Today it is dominated by large malls — Oriental Plaza at the Chang'an end, apm and the venerable Beijing Department Store along the street — and by international high-street brands. The famous Donghuamen night market, with its skewered scorpions, starfish and seahorses, closed for good in 2016, and the surviving Wangfujing Snack Street has since been pared back into a shorter, more souvenir-leaning lane; the city's serious street-food crowds have moved on to Gui Jie and Xianyukou.
It remains a busy, easy stroll — well served by subway (Line 1) and a natural stopping point between the Forbidden City and the National Museum — but it is now a mainstream shopping street rather than a food destination. The Wangfujing Bookstore at the southern end is worth a browse for its art and design section, and St Joseph's Church, set back on a small plaza halfway up, is the one piece of older character that survives the redevelopment.
