The Chongwu Army Temple served the garrison forces that manned the fortress walls from the Ming dynasty onward. The original structure was built to provide the soldiers with a place of worship and to seek divine protection for the defense of the coast. The current building preserves the traditional courtyard layout with a front hall, inner courtyard, and main shrine hall dedicated to Guan Yu, the martial deity.
The temple is small by the standards of major Fujian religious sites, but its military context gives it a specific character. The incense burners and votive offerings reflect continued local devotion rather than tourist ritual, and the resident caretaker is usually willing to explain the history of the site. The temple sits within easy walking distance of the fortress gates, making it a natural stop during a circuit of the old town.
