West Bay Beach

West Bay Beach runs along the coastal strip just outside the fortress walls, a reasonable swimming beach with open views across the Taiwan Strait. The water is generally clean and the beach is not heavily developed by the standards of nearby resort areas, which keeps it relatively uncrowded on ordinary weekdays. The coastal rock formations at the northern end of the beach are the most photogenic section, where volcanic rock has been shaped by wave action into layered shelves and channels that reward exploration at low tide.

The beach is most useful as a complement to the fortress visit rather than as a destination in itself — Fujian has better beaches elsewhere, but West Bay provides a pleasant half-hour of sea air after the stone lanes of the old town. Seafood restaurants serving fresh catch from the fishing harbour are clustered in the streets just behind the beach and are consistently better value than anywhere targeting tourist trade.
