Zhangjiangkou Mangrove National Nature Reserve protects the estuary of the Zhangjiang River in Yunxiao County, southwest of Zhangzhou. It covers about 2,360 hectares and was added to the Ramsar list of Wetlands of International Importance in 2008, making it one of Fujian's most significant coastal ecology sites.
For travellers, the appeal is quieter than a temple or old town: boardwalks, tidal water, birdlife, and the unusual sight of mangroves at the northern edge of their Chinese range. It fits best as a nature-focused excursion from Zhangzhou or Dongshan rather than a casual city stop, and timing matters because low and high tide change the landscape.
