Reservation Square and the Pipa Statue

The geographic and social centre of Dunhuang, with a large bronze statue of a Tang-dynasty dancer playing the pipa lute thrown back over her shoulder — the figure is copied from one of the most famous murals at Mogao (Cave 112) and has become the unofficial emblem of the city. The square is busiest at night when the lights come up and the surrounding pedestrian streets fill with locals and tourists.

A useful orienting landmark and a pleasant place to spend a warm evening. The night market is two minutes' walk east; several silk and jade shops and the long-distance bus station are nearby.
